My name is Stephen Hoyles. I have been a subscriber to Peak Performance for some time now, using the publication for advice, tips, ideas and inspiration for my own writings. I first came across the place way back in my university days and have used it ever since.
I am a Personal Trainer and all-round fitness enthusiast. Aside from my work as a PT, I also run an online fitness consultancy at http://www.hoylesfitess.com.
Hopefully my blog will inform, entertain, inspire and start debate. Some of my methods you may agree with, some you may not, but that is the beauty of a topic as huge as diet and exercise - we all have our own ways of doing things.

Self-circuit training
I have recently changed my training to include more Crossfit style work. Essentially, Crossfit is a multi-disciplinary approach to training. The ethos appears to be high-intensity work encompassing resistance work, cardio work and intervals.
I styled a workout along their lines ideas, including a few exercises I haven't used in a long time. The session looked like this...
50 reps of
Thrusters (a squat followed by a push press)
Sit ups
Squats
Sumo Deadlift High Pulls (sumo deadlift and a high pull in one)
Box Jumps
Press Ups
Lunges
I did this 'for time' - I completed it as quickly as possible. It took me 17 minutes 10 seconds. Then the problems started.
I took a few minutes to lie down and recover. I was sweating, shaking and feeling really quite sick. I sat up to start putting the equipment away, but like a lazy teenager I immediately lay back down - I wasn't ready yet!
When I did summon the strength to put the kit back, I knew it was the hardest I had trained in a long time. I was shaking as I was walking, and that continued as I showered. It wasn't until I had dried off and changed into normal clothes that it finally stopped.
Fast forward half an hour, and I felt incredible! Knowing I had trained so hard gave me an intrinsic feeling of reward and left me knowing I had pushed my fitness up a notch. Even though at the time I was shattered, I loved the fact I had pushed my limit.
I had used workouts like this in the past - most notably with the famous '300' workout that did the rounds a couple of years back, and the effect is always the same - intense hard work. I love the fact you work for time, so you really get a good cardio workout too.
Give the circuits a try - be creative and make up your own. Just work hard, work safe and have fun!

Crossfit
How does this vary from the sort of stuff that is done in more traditional 'curcuit training 'classes in a sports hall?
Seems similar, apart from being over in a third of the time and doing less stuff.
Does that mean that participants in the one hour classes probably put in less effort and a lot of it is just time fillers ?
