Question:
Does anyone, know what factors affect a person's speed?
I'm trying to do PE coursework, and we have to write about the different factors that affect a person's fitness for example, muscle, weight, height or anything like that... I'm working on speed at the moment and I'm really really stuck. If any one could help then that'd be great. thnx

Muscle fiber type. Type 1 and type 2. Fast twitch slow twitch. Flexibility and the training thereof. Fiber size, amount of neurons for muscle recruitment etc. That should provide a good baseline for some good searches.

Most of it is genetic makeup - this plays a big part, more than anything else. However training can cause some muscular adaptations too.
When i say genetic, i mean on the ratio of type1/type2a/2b and 2c fibres. These ultimately determine your capabilities fitness-wise.
After that, you would look at the person's biomechanics: -
Height - and lever/ limb length
Weight - muscle mass as opposed to BMI
Force - getting that mass to move
Power - what strength can be applied in as quick a time as possible.
After that, you would look at the individual's surroundings, especially training facilities. Therefore if they are in Loughborough University they are more likely to be developing than if they went to - no disrespect intended - somewhere like Glamorgan University.
Hope that helps, just get some more research around these points and you will be laughing!!!

There are different types of speed, not only the explosive one. The primary factor is the skill, which manage the other ones.
