Question:

What is the difference between oxygen uptake for adults and youth?

This is for a university assignment based on scientific basis of health and physical education.I need to know the differences in oxygen uptake between youths and adults and the implications it has on train ing methods

Hello.

Unfortunately no one on here can answer that question for you. That is because it is required for a university assignment. Therefore, it needs to be supported by research. Find the research then you find the answer.

A few things to think about….
Are you looking at the oxygen uptake kinetics? Or aerobic power (VO2max)? Or both?
How are you defining the age categories, e.g. Child = < 18? Or before puberty?
Look at how and why VO2max reduces after a certain age in adults (by 1% per year). Why does this happen? It there a reduction in muscle mass over age or Haemoglobin levels etc.

Try this book.

ACSM's resource manual for guidelines for exercise testing and prescription / American College of Sports Medicine; [Leonard A. Kaminsky ... et al., editors].
2006 (5th ed.)

It has a chapter on what you are looking for….

There will also be a reference section in the back of the chapter to help you with your literature search.

Hope this helps a little.

Good luck.

Start by looking in review journals such as Sports Medicine or Research Quarterly. A good article to start would be

Poole DC, Richardson RS. Determinants of oxygen uptake. Implications for exercise testing.Sports Med. 1997 Nov;24(5):308-20.

There are many determinants of maximal oxygen uptake and you should show evidence that links the physiology of adults and children.

Children(till 18) have lower VO2max that can reach 55mmol/kg/min than adults but greater recovery.
