How can I train to keep my maximum speed throughout a 400m sprint ?
In 8 weeks I have a city track meet and I would like to win sooo... I run the 400m how can I ensure I keep my maximum speed from the end of acceleration to the finish line ? any training tips would be greatly appreciated thank you to all who respond.

my athletes who run 400m do 2x per week good tempo runs of 5 miles to build endurance to be able to maintain speed for 400m also we do intervals of 500m-1000m to work on stamina. not necessarily real fast but with short intervals. plyos 2x per week are also helpful.

distance runs of 5 miles 2x per week and longer intervals of 500m-1000m at slower pace with short rest.

Practice pace judgement. Run your own race so that you have energy in the home straight and get the most from your anaerobic capacity. Try running 200m at your designated race pace (first 200m split for example) - don't accelerate as the line nears, keep it even. Take 2 minutes and repeat again (up to 6 times as your fitness allows). This way when it comes to race day you will run on auto-pilot and achieve your best time. This is the premise on which Michael Johnson trained under Clyde Hart

Why would you train endurance when you only have 8 weeks training time? Thats simply not enough time to bring about endurance training adaptations.
Work on max strength and plyometrics in the gym and top speed on the track. These training methods have an accelerated response due to their effects on the neuromuscular system.

I do believe that you can sprint at your maximum for around 300 meters. You have to make sure you have a stragety for the race when you are training.

Dominic and Allan have given you the best information for a short time of training. BUT i can't beleive no one has told you it is impossible for anyone to hold their max speed for longer than 4 to 6 seconds. So most 400 runners learn how to reach max speed, relax, and go into a sprint coast for much of the backstretch and then work the curve and bring it home with good form holding for less decrease in speed at the finish-when everybody is struggling. You can always get faster-Russ
